Karina Karina Cannelakis conducts Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra on Pentatone

Bartok’s “Concerto for Orchestra” has long been one of my favorite symphonic compositions. I like the music, the story behind the commission, and the many extraordinary recordings available of this remarkable work. Live performances that stick happily in my memory include several with Esa-Pekka Salonen and one conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, all with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in Walt Disney Concert Hall. This is an ensemble that prides itself in extraordinary performances of new music. The unique sound of LA Phil strings may have something to do with this well-deserved reputation. I have a personal confession to make. Before Yarlung Records was born, we used to gather with friends to listen to multiple recordings of the same work over long multi-course dinners and sometimes with exotic speakers or amplifiers to share with our friends. We haven’t had time to do this since and I miss these evenings. They enabled us Continue Reading →

Wind in the Willows

ALBUM BOOKLET Yarlung celebrates two people close to us whom we have lost in the past few months.  My friend the veteran Yarlung executive producer Carlos Mollura passed away in February, and my sweet mother Linda Attiyeh died last November.  Both Carlos and Linda believed whole-heartedly in Yarlung and in our mission, and supported us unstintingly since our inception.  We dedicate Antonio Lysy’s Yarlung 15th Anniversary edition of his GRAMMY® Award winning Antonio Lysy at The Broad: Music from Argentina to Carlos.  He and his wonderful wife Haydee (my honorary sister) underwrote this album and serve as executive producers.   I have loved Wind in the Willows since my mother first read it to me when I was four years old, and we dedicate Yarlung’s first audio book to Linda Attiyeh.  Many thanks to executive producer Mike Rosell and audio engineers Cliff Harris and Scot Derwingson-Peacock for your talent and guidance.  Continue Reading →

Jorge Capadocia, NativeDSD, review of Yuko Mabuchi Trio

Yuko Mabuchi Trio: Some Standards and some nice surprises On this album, Yuko Mabuchi is joined by Del Atkins on bass and Bobby Breton on drums to perform some jazz standards and some nice surprises. The repertoire is varied with respect to style. We get to listen to pensive songs such as Valse Noire (which is borderline melancholic), medleys, Latin Jazz and spirited tunes. This live recording starts with What Is This Thing Called Love and Yuko’s playing, along with Bobby’s drum solo, immediately engages the audience. Throughout the album, Yuko is very sensitive and lyrical in her playing and does not go for bombast unless the music demands. When it does though, like in Sona’s Song (a composition of her own), we are in for a real treat: a very intense outburst erupts, breaking a simple delicate melody. Del Atkins and Bobby Breton are supportive in their playing, with Continue Reading →

Dr. David W. Robinson Awards Yarlung Records the 2015 Brutus Award in support of the label’s promotion of our musicians in high resolution DSD

The cutting edge Positive Feedback Brutus Awards are given at the end of each year by Dave Clark and Dr. David W. Robinson. They are awards for the best products that PFO’s editors have heard in their listening rooms during the past year. Yarlung Records was once again selected  as one of this year’s honorees. Dr. Robinson writes: “The song continues! Bob Attiyeh and Yarlung Records have continued their Quad DSD series of transfers from Bob’s masterpieces on analog tape (15 ips half-track quarter-inch tape). Working with Jared Sacks, Tom Caulfield, and the other folks at NativeDSD.com, Bob handles the raw transfers from his master tapes via the industry-leading Merging Technologies HAPI ADDA (which he now owns!) to Quad DSD. The inimitable Tom Caulfield, a Grammy winner himself, does the post-production work, and then sends the DSD files along to NativeDSD for publication. You can find Bob Attiyeh’s recordings in Continue Reading →
